The Republican Party

It was mentioned in class today that the Republican Party in the early 1970's wanted to affiliate themselves with country music because it held the ideal of an unchanging society. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time we see the Republican Party so solely associating themselves with one social group? I found this interesting because we still see this today, that the Republican party as a whole represents "true American values" and traditional life styles no matter the social class. Why do you think this strategy has been so consistent the past forty years?

  1. I think this strategy came from a time where it was very successful. A large population of Americans did not like the change that was taking place in the country and would feel more comfortable with things going back to the way they were. The Republican Party capitalized on these feelings and established their base which still holds today. I think it has been so successful because there will always be a group of people that want thing to go back to the way they were, even though some sort of progress is inevitable. Short Answer: It works.

  2. Country music listeners were also part of the Silent Majority. That was a big reason why the Republican party took interest in country music and its values. They represented similar traditional American values; and majority usually wins.

  3. I also do not think we should forget that BOTH parties are known for attracting particular groups/ individuals!
