SDS what what??

What does everyone think about the weatherman underground? At this point, we have taken a consistently objective viewpoint in class but I want to know the opinion on these guys. Are they criminals and terrorists? Or are they heros? Liberal idealougues or students with kindergarden logic?

  1. The weathermen are heroes to me. That's not to say that I agree with everything that they did. Their intentions were good. Their views, in my opinion were correct. The U.S. was viciously killing innocent Vietnamese people and they had to find a way to stop this disaster. However, they tried to fight fire with fire. They were will to bomb and kill to get their point across. Fighting fire with fire just leads to more fire. Ergo, hardly anything was accomplished and they all just ended up in hiding. What is heroic about them is that there were so few of them, yet they were so loud and they made America listen to them. Just because they made mistakes does not mean that they were wrong.

  2. I cannot say that the weathermen were heroes; to say that seems heartless because of all of the destruction they caused. I think that they were misguided individuals who wanted to do something about the injustice of the Vietnam War and eventually, other causes. There is absolutely nothing noble or logical about acting violently in order to protest violent causes. They had great ideas (for instance, their manifesto was well argued), but terrible means.

  3. I think that they are heroes in a sense. They fought for their ideals and their ideology and what they fought was right. There really is no good or evil because there are always two sides. And the two sides will always see their opposite as the villain. The Weather Underground also made sure that no one would get hurt by their destructive act, making their tactics more humane than the war itself. Their destructive methods were simply used to send a message when people might not normally receive it.
