The documentary showed us a completely new Wallace after he was paralyzed. When he went back to campaigning he repented his past actions and succeeded in garnering a significant amount of black votes. The African Americans shown in the documentary seemed to wholeheartedly support him and believe that he had returned to "the old Wallace." To what extent was this transformation genuine? Was it just another ploy to win votes?
When the film first began we saw what I think was the real Wallace. He was just starting his political career and he said something along the lines of if he judged someone by the color of their skin then he he didn't have what it took to be Alabama's governor. I think this proves that when he became greedy his politics went with that greediness as well.
ReplyDeleteI think it's hard to define anyone by one moment in their life time. People change based on circumstances that occur in their life, so it's really hard to say which one was the real Wallace. At their respective moments, they both were the real Wallace. I took his repentance to be in earnest, as his unfortunate circumstances allowed for such self evaluation to occur.
