Women in Country Music

In 'Creating Country Music', Peterson mentions that "women were systematically excluded from the business side of the developing industry and for decades were expected to fit a few stereotyped performance roles" (Bufwack and Oermann, 1993)
What were those stereotyped roles and why were women less involved in developing country music? Did this result in them being less authentic?

  1. Earlier in the article it said that "they sought old men steeped in tradition" for country music. This makes sense considering most stereotypical country music promotes a rugged lifestyle and "manly" activities such as hunting, fishing, driving trucks etc. At this time women were still considered delicate and innocent and therefore not suitable for country music. The article never elaborates on the "stereotyped performance roles" women were expected to play, but I can see how they were not readily accepted by the country music scene.

  2. I have to agree that much of this makes sense. As has been mentioned before by Professor Fink in lecture, Country Music was buried in the past, which included none of the problems of the present. This itself includes the right of women and their social mobility.
