60's sitcoms

Why did the situational sitcoms of the sixties resonate with the majority of people? They did not reflect anything that was actually happening at the time in the sense that they did not portray events accurately. They were a symbol of conformity in a time of radical change, so how could people relate to them? Could it have been an escape from the monumental changes that could have been very draining on an individual?

  1. Maybe people could relate to the conformed people in the show because they themselves were censored or conformed.

  2. I agree, I think that most Americans saw the sitcoms as an escape from the current events taking place. I think that conformity is one of those things that people use to feel like they have control; so maybe these sitcoms were a response to the chaotic and uncontrollable feeling that was discovered through the use of LSD and other drugs of the time - and also the actions and events that stemmed from this drug usage. Maybe people felt threatened about this new and mind-blowing drug experience, and its ramifications, so they turned to television to alleviate their anxieties.
