Robert Zimmerman, a.k.a. Bob Dylan has been placed in and out of many a category in his time as a musician. Started a rock band in high school, became a Woody Guthrie groupie, was a folk singer, then a folk-rock singer, and threw in some country folk rock in the mix as well. If there was one category to put Mr. Zimmerman in, where would you put him? And where do you think he'd put himself?
I don't think that he can be placed into one specific category even though he is known as a folk singer. Fink told us that when he first played a concert with an electric guitar the die hard folk fans booed him because they felt he had sold out, but he was also able to gain more fans. I think he would just label himself as creating what he felt at the time because in the reading it says he changed and adjusted his style so many times, but every time he was able to gain more fans. His style of music refected who he was at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI also don't think that Bob Dylan can really fit under one label. He played a melody of different styles, and I believe that flexibility comes with being successful as an artist. As much as he sounded like he was a man passionate about his art, I think the desire for success and a top spot on the charts at least crossed his mind once or twice. If Bob Dylan had to give himself a label, I think he would just call himself a working musician.
ReplyDeleteLegend would probably be the term that is closest to the truth. I think his influence in music is undeniable. It's true that there were many musicians that drove the 1960's, but I'm almost positive Dylan is at the top of the list. I mean, you'd have to be a legend if you influenced the Beatles, right?
